Inside the Washington Monument

The elevator.

The floor in the elevator lobby.

The windows are tiny and almost invisible from the ground.

The monument was funded by donations, and was contructed from 1848-1854, and 1876-1884. Lack of funds forced the construction to halt from 1855 to 1875. During that time it sat as an ugly hollow stump, exposed to the weather. Today you can see the discontinuity in color about 1/3 of the way up.

The interior is lined with hundreds of stones provided by major donors to the construction fund. Volunteers clean the stones.
